The one who came with the first idea of telescope was Hans Lippershey. He was the one who had the idea back then even though the name of his invention was not a telescope yet.
Little did people know that he was the first one since the idea had spread widely and it was copied by others. Additionally, there was a little bit of information only that was related to him. Here is some information for you.
Early Life of the Inventor
There was unclear date and month of his birth. It was only known that he was born in 1570 in Wesel, Germany. As for now, Wesel is in western Germany. He died around September 1619 in Middelburg, Netherlands.
As a German-Dutch, his occupation was spectacle maker. People also knew him as a master lens grinder beside the spectacle maker. Back then, he had a shop.
As mentioned above, he was indeed born in Germany in 1570, and then he moved and married in Zeeland in 1594. As Lippershey married someone and settled in that province, he became a citizen in 1602.
The Telescope Invention
He was interested in making lenses for glasses and also other uses. He went through many trials to find method to create lenses.
It was unclear story how he invented the idea. It was said that he was not the first one who experimented with lenses combination. Another story mentioned that he was the one that developed the idea.
In addition, another story explained that he got the idea by observing two children who were playing in front of his workshop. At that moment, he tried to know how to see distant objects in bigger look.
The Application for Telescope’s Patent
Hans Lippershey had tried to file an application of the patent regarding his invention. He filed it on October 1608. Unfortunately, another spectacle maker had claimed the patent first.
Another source mentioned that the government rejected the idea because the idea was too simple. However, the Dutch government asked him to create binocular telescopes. Lippershey received a good compensation for what he created for the government.
The Copy of His Idea
After Hans Lippershey filed an application to get a patent, it was revealed to the public. Because of that, there were some people who tried to apply the idea and tried to get their own versions.
Galileo Galilei was known to be one of people who tried to create a telescope on his own based on the work of Lippershey. He increased the magnification and the result, the telescope he made enabled people to spot craters and mountains on the Moon.
In addition, the Lippershey’s name was used to name an asteroid and a crater on the moon. Again, an exoplanet that was recently found was named after him as well.
It is all thanks to Hans Lippershey that various telescopes are created based on his original work. All the inventions based on his work are amazing and very helpful.
